Once upon a time in ancient China…
The ice cream as we know it today does not have its origins in beautiful Italy, oh no, but in ancient China and Greece. Around 3000 years ago, ice was made from snow refined with spices and honey. The Italian merchant Marco Polo finally brought the recipe to Europe, where it became a delicious specialty in a short time. This is also thanks to the cooling effect of nitric salt, which was later discovered. Shortly thereafter, a wide variety of recipes with rose water, cinnamon, chocolate spread… In the 18th century, the first real ice cream business opened. However, the ice cream only became suitable for the masses in the 19th century, with the invention of Carl von Linde’s chiller, the forerunner of today’s refrigerator.
