Vibrant Nativity Scene at Christmas Time – Pessebre Vivent in Pals

“Silent night! Holy night!
everything is sleeping; Lonely wakes up
Only the Holy Couple.
Holder boy in curly hair,
Sleep in heavenly rest!”

Joseph Mohr (1792-1848), 1816

When in Germany the crib is fetched from the attic and lovingly decorated with wooden figures, a glowing Bethlehem star and miniature sheep, many Catalan villages have been preparing for just a single crib for almost a whole year. No wooden figures are used, no, everything has to be real, lively – including ox and donkey. Nobody can shy away, every inhabitant is assigned a role, from the very youngest to the elders.
